Few public figures have opened up their private lives more, and more honestly, than former High Court judge and distinguished thinker Michael Kirby. He talks to Anne Summers.

Michael Kirby was Australia's longest-serving judge on his retirement from the High Court of Australia in February 2009. In addition to his judicial duties, he has served on three university governing bodies and was chancellor of Macquarie University from 1984 to 1993. He has also served on many national and international bodies including the World Health Organization's Global Commission on AIDS, the International Commission of Jurists, the UNESCO International Bioethics Committee, the UNAIDS Reference Group on HIV and Human Rights, and the UNDP Global Commission on HIV and the Law.

Anne Summers (Australian)

Anne Summers is the author of Damned Whores and God's Police, Gamble for Power, Ducks on the Pond and The End of Equality, among other books. She edited the landmark American feminist magazine Ms. and Good Weekend and has written for The Sydney Morning Herald, The Australian Financial Review and numerous other publications. She has been an advisor to prime ministers Bob Hawke and Paul Keating, chaired the board of Greenpeace International, and been deputy president of Sydney's Powerhouse Museum. She lives in Sydney. Her latest book is The Lost Mother.
