The apple might have fallen on Newton’s head but it was two women, Émilie du Châtelet in France and Mary Somerville in Scotland, who popularised his theories. Robyn Arianrhod has unearthed the story of these two extraordinary trailblazers. She talks to ABC Radio National’s Lynne Malcolm.

Robyn Arianrhod (Australian)

Dr Robyn Arianrhod is a writer and mathematician, and an adjunct research fellow at Monash University. Her first book, Einstein’s Heroes, was shortlisted for The Age Non-fiction Book of the Year Award and the Victorian Premier’s Prize, and has been translated into several languages. Her latest book is Seduced by Logic.

Lynne Malcolm (Australian)

Lynne Malcolm is the Executive Producer of ABC Radio National’s Science Unit and she currently hosts All in the Mind. This is RN’s weekly exploration of all things mental – a program about the mind, brain and behaviour, and the endlessly fascinating interactions between them. Lynne has received several awards for her radio work, including Bronze and Gold Medals in the New York Radio Festivals International Awards, the Michael Daley Award for Journalism in Science, the radio award from the NSW Mental Health Services and finalist status in the Eureka Awards.
