Little is known about Joseph Lyons, Australia’s tenth and one of the country’s most popular and long-serving Prime Ministers, partly because he deserted the ALP after having served as a minister in the Scullin government and has always been denounced as a “rat”. Equally, the conservatives have never given him his due. Anne Henderson’s biography is an attempt to set the record straight. She talks to Rodney Cavalier.

Anne Henderson (Australian)

Anne Henderson is deputy director of The Sydney Institute which she has operated with her husband Gerard Henderson, a well-known political commentator, for the past 20 years. Anne also edits The Sydney Papers Online and co-edits The Sydney Institute Quarterly. She is the author of a number of non-fiction books including her most recent, the acclaimed biography of former prime minister Joseph Lyons.

Rodney Cavalier (Australian)

Rodney Cavalier is a former Labor minister, and a historian of Australian politics and cricket. He edits a monthly newsletter circulating within the ALP, the only genuine Labor periodical in Australia. His book, Power Crisis: The self-destruction of a state Labor Party, was a remorseless examination of the structural weaknesses of a party that no longer has a base in the Australian community.
