Forty years ago Dennis Altman’s book on the oppression and liberation of gays literally helped create a revolution in the personal lives of thousands of people. He talks to Anton Enus.

Dennis Altman (Australian)

Dennis Altman is the son of Jewish refugees, and a writer and academic who first came to attention with the publication of his book Homosexual: Oppression & Liberation in 1972. Since then Dennis has written 11 books exploring sexuality, politics and their inter-relationship in Australia, the United States and now globally. Dennis is professor of politics and director of the Institute for Human Security at La Trobe University in Melbourne. Since 2004 he has been a member of the Governing Council of the International AIDS Society. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2008.

Anton Enus (Australian)

Anton Enus is a broadcast journalist and presenter of SBS’s World News Australia bulletins. His career began at SABC, South Africa’s national broadcaster, where he was part of the team that covered the country’s historic return to democracy in 1994 and filed stories from Rwanda, Burundi, Zaire, Uganda, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Anton also spent seven years as contributor to CNN World Report and won Best International Report for his story marking the 25th anniversary of Christiaan Barnard’s pioneering heart transplant.
