Karen McCartney, founding editor of interiors magazine Inside Out has compiled a selection of significant examples of Australian houses of the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s, each brilliantly photographed. The homes from these three decades form a significant part of Australian architectural history. Karen will be joined by esteemed architects Peter Tonkin and Timothy Hill to discuss the relationship between the architect and owner and the linking of the building to its site, materials and architectural detailing. Chair: Fenella Kernebone.

Co-presented with Historic Houses Trust as part of trustwords.

Peter Tonkin (Australian)

Peter Tonkin joined Brian Zulaikha to form Tonkin Zulaikha Greer Architects in 1987, later joined by Tim Greer. The firm has a strong heritage and urban-design reputation and has won over 90 awards. Major works include the Australian War Memorial in London, the National Arboretum in Canberra, Victoria Square in Adelaide, and major cultural buildings and urban projects across Australia. Peter is an adjunct professor at the University of Queensland and the University of Canberra, and a trustee of the Historic Houses Trust of NSW.

Karen McCartney (Australian)

Karen McCartney has a wealth of experience in the areas of art, design and style, spanning 20 years and several continents. She has written for, among other titles, British Elle Decoration and the Financial Times. In Australia, Karen edited Marie Claire Lifestyle before becoming founding editor of Inside Out. She is now group editorial director, Lifestyle Content at News Ltd, and has published her second book on the subject of Australian residential architecture.

Timothy Hill (Australian)

Timothy Hill began practising as an architect with Brian Donovan in 1992 and now leads a staff of 30 with two other directors. Unusually, their output is deliberately unspecialised, ranging through furniture commissions, city centre masterplans, landscapes, campus buildings, change-management facilitation, office towers and houses. A broad array of institutions, private clients and governments have been partners in projects, often in the confronting act of creating something from nothing.

Fenella Kernebone (Australian)

Fenella Kernebone is a television and radio presenter and producer, MC, interviewer and writer. In 2010-2011, Fenella hosted Art Nation on ABC TV and presented and produced on the previous arts show, Sunday Arts. Prior to that, she was one of the hosts and film reviewers of The Movie Show on SBS TV. In addition to her new role on Radio National’s By Design, Fenella is also the host of her long-running, cult electronic music show, The Sound Lab, on Triple J radio.
