The world’s finances have for too long operated like a giant Ponzi scheme, argues ex-banker and author Satyajit Das, with already indebted nations being expected to prop up those that are even deeper in debt. It can’t last. Or can it?

Imagine your future: Will you be able to retire “comfortably” or at all? Who will pay for your healthcare and aged care? What future and prospects do your children face?

Growth underpins our economic and financial system. In the post war era, it has been the mechanism for dragging people out of poverty, improving living standards, turning third world into modern prosperous nations. But growth was based on financialisation (excessive debt), misuse of non-renewable resources (oil, water) and mispricing of pollution and irreversible climate change. This “ponzi prosperity” is now coming to an end. Can the world cope with “the end of growth”?

Change from printed program: Venue changed to Wharf Theatre 2.
