Winning two Walkley titles in 2011 for Young Journalist and Best International Journalism for her reports from Bahrain and Syria, Yaara Bou Melhem shows courage as a journalist. She talks to Eric Campbell about what it takes to report from the front.

Eric Campbell (Australian)

Eric Campbell is one of Australia's most experienced international reporters. He was the ABC's Moscow correspondent from 1996 to 2000, and was based in Beijing covering China, Afghanistan and Central Asia from 2001 to 2003 until he was wounded in a suicide bombing in Kurdistan in the first days of the Iraq war. Eric then joined Foreign Correspondent as its Sydney-based roving reporter. Eric has won a Logie Award and a New York Festivals World Medal and is a two-time Walkley Awards finalist. His book Absurdistan was published in 2005.

Yaara Bou Melhem (Australian)

Yaara Bou Melhem is a multi-award winning reporter and video journalist currently based in Sydney. In 2011 she was named Young Australian Journalist of the Year by the Walkley Foundation for her reporting from Syria and went on to win a Walkley Award for International Journalism. Yaara’s first short documentary saw her awarded the Young Australian Television Journalist of the Year in 2009. She’s been a four-time finalist in the United Nations Association of Australia Media Peace Awards for her TV reporting from the Middle East. Yaara currently works for SBS's Dateline.
