The 2012 US Presidential election is shaping up to be one of the most fascinating in recent history, with the incumbent, Barack Obama, America’s first African-American President set to break the $1 billion barrier in campaign spending, while the Republicans scramble to unite behind a candidate despite the woeful US economy and Obama’s low ratings. Predictions are hazardous at this stage of the race but our panel will have a stab at it: Joe McGinniss, author of The Selling of the President and The Rogue, his biography of Sarah Palin, the University of Sydney’s David Smith and journalist Annie Groer cast their predictions. Joe McGinniss (International)

Joe McGinniss is a New York Times bestselling author of 12 books on topics ranging from crime and politics to horse-racing and football. He has worked as an investigative journalist for over 40 years and has spent time living in Alaska, at one stage living next door to the Palins. The Rogue is destined to become Joe’s crowning achievement.

David Smith (Australian)

Dr David Smith is a University of Sydney academic jointly appointed between the United States Studies Centre and the School of Social and Political Sciences. His research examines political relations between governments and religious communities in the US and other countries, with a focus on Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses. Recently he has explored how the religious identity of presidential candidates affects support for them, looking especially at Barack Obama and Mitt Romney.

Annie Groer (International)

Award-winning journalist Annie Groer is a former Washington Post and writer. She has covered the White House, Capitol Hill and numerous presidential and congressional campaigns, and has been a presidential debate panellist. Her work, ranging from politics to design, culture and travel, has appeared in The New York Times,, Town & Country and More magazines. She currently writes for the "She The People" blog at and is working on a memoir.

Julia Baird (Australian)

Julia Baird is an author, broadcaster and journalist. She has just returned from the United States, where she worked as a columnist and deputy editor of Newsweek. Her writing has appeared in a range of publications including The Daily Beast, Harpers Bazaar, The Guardian, the Philadelphia Inquirer, The Monthly, The New York Times and The Sydney Morning Herald. Her first book was Media Tarts: How the Australian Media Frames Female Politicians. She is currently writing a biography of Queen Victoria.
