Children’s Laureate Alison Lester drew on her own experience of travelling to Antarctica to create her latest picture book. She talks to L.A. Larkin about the magic of this beautiful continent, the threats facing its fragile environment, and why we need to act now.

Alison Lester (Australian)

Alison Lester is one of the most popular and bestselling writers and illustrators of children's books in Australia and has won many awards. Her career now spans more than 21 years and in that time she has produced many Australian classics, such as Magic Beach and Are We There Yet?. In 2012 Alison was named an inaugural Australian Children’s Laureate and is also an ambassador for the National Year of Reading. Alison’s latest picture book is Sophie Scott Goes South.

L.A. Larkin divides her time between writing environmental thrillers and her work for one of Australia’s leading climate-change consultancies. She studied literature at the University of London, followed by a successful career in magazine publishing in London. Since publishing The Genesis Flaw, Larkin now runs thriller-writing workshops and undertakes public-speaking engagements on the subject of climate change and thrillers.
