A freewheeling talkfest featuring assorted members of the Chaser team and some of the Festival’s top writers in a relaxed and intoxicating (fully licensed) atmosphere. Lively and/or defamatory discussion, hardcore Q&A and live music included. Tonight Jeffrey Eugenides, Alice Pung and Julia Baird join the line-up while Waleed Aly and Robot Child rock the stage.

Robot Child play original prog- and metal-influenced rock music with a splash of jazz and funk. Featuring Waleed Aly on lead guitar, Jeff Wortman on lead vocals, Marty Holt on bass, Jonny Palmer on keyboard and Dan Slater on drums.

Waleed Aly (Australian)

Waleed Aly is the host of ABC Radio National’s new live daily program RN Drive. He shares presenting duties with Julian Morrow who takes the chair each Friday evening from 6-8pm. Waleed is also the host of ABC TV’s Big Ideas and is currently appearing on ABC TV’s Agony Uncles. He is a lecturer in politics at Monash University and the author of What's Right? The Future of Conservatism in Australia (Quarterly Essay 37) and People Like Us: How Arrogance is Dividing Islam and the West. He is also the guitarist and main songwriter for Melbourne originals band Robot Child, which is the house band for The Chaser's show, The Empty Vessel. Waleed is looking forward to joining his fellow RN Drive host and Chaser Julian Morrow on stage!

Jeffrey Eugenides (International)

Jeffrey Eugenides’ first novel, The Virgin Suicides, was translated into 15 languages and made into a major motion picture. In 2003 Eugenides received the Pulitzer Prize for his novel Middlesex. He is the recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and The National Endowment for the Arts, and the receiver of a Whiting Writers' Award. His most recent work, The Marriage Plot, is a novel about the glories and vicissitudes of young love. Born in Detroit, Jeffrey now lives in New York.

Alice Pung (Australian)

Alice Pung is the author of Her Father’s Daughter. Alice’s first book, Unpolished Gem, won the Australian Book Industry Newcomer of the Year Award and was nominated for the Victorian and New South Wales Premier’s Literary Awards. She edited the anthology Growing Up Asian in Australia and her work has appeared in The Monthly, Good Weekend, The Age, The Best Australian Stories and Meanjin.

Julia Baird (Australian)

Julia Baird is an author, broadcaster and journalist. She has just returned from the United States, where she worked as a columnist and deputy editor of Newsweek. Her writing has appeared in a range of publications including The Daily Beast, Harpers Bazaar, The Guardian, the Philadelphia Inquirer, The Monthly, The New York Times and The Sydney Morning Herald. Her first book was Media Tarts: How the Australian Media Frames Female Politicians. She is currently writing a biography of Queen Victoria.
