One of the festival’s most popular events is back. Take one award winning, Brooklyn-born, Puerto Rican wordsmith, Australia's Poetry Slam Champion, and two acclaimed playwrights. Mix well. You've got Lemon Andersen, Luka Lesson, Skye Loneragan and Benito Di Fonzo. Hosted by the director of Word Travels, Miles Merrill.

Lemon Andersen (International)

Lemon Andersen is a critically acclaimed poet, author and actor. He is an original cast member of Russell Simmons’ Def Poetry Jam on Broadway and regularly appeared on HBO’s Def Poetry. His film credits include The Son of No One and The Soloist. His critically acclaimed show, County of Kings, was produced by Spike Lee and the Culture Project; the book adaptation won the Grand Prize at the 2010 New York Book Festival. Lemon’s new play, ToasT, will premiere as part of the Under The Radar festival.

Luka Lesson (Australian)

Luka Lesson is a hip hop artist, the current Australian Poetry Slam Champion and co-director of The Centre for Poetics and Justice based in Melbourne. Luka uses hip hop and poetry to run community development projects for marginalised young people. He has taught Indigenous studies at Monash University for the past two years and holds a first-class honours degree in the same field. Luka's first full-length book and album is Please Resist Me.

Benito Di Fonzo (Australian)

Benito Di Fonzo is a journalist, playwright, poet and performer. He has written for, and been profiled
by, the best and worst of publications including The Sydney Morning Herald, The Sun-Herald, The Australian and CNN. Benito has performed his narrative neo-beat poems and spoken word in London, Edinburgh, Sydney, Melbourne, Rome, Adelaide, Perth and Indonesia. As well as writing radio serials and plays for 2SER and FBi Radio he has had two plays broadcast live from the Sydney Opera House.

Skye Loneragan (Australian)

A playwright and performance poet, Skye Loneragan’s first of four solo shows, Cracked, won an Edinburgh Fringe First and was adapted for ABC Radio National. Her most recent play, Mish Gorecki Goes Missing, was shortlisted for three awards in the UK. Publications include contributions to Buying Into The Property Market, I Confess and The Grin Of Our Choices. Residencies include playwright-in-residence for Visible Fictions Theatre Company and The Scottish Book Trust.

Miles Merrill (Australian)

Originally from Chicago, Miles Merrill is the creative director of the literary arts association, Word Travels. He has worked as a writer and performer of monologues, poems and stories for 15 years. His productions The Night Words Festival (Sydney Opera House 2008) and Slamming (Sydney Festival 2005) won outstanding critical acclaim. Miles introduced poetry slams to Australia in 2004 and he created the national Australian Poetry Slam in 2007. He publishes on CD, DVD, online and in print but his work is best experienced live.
